Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is exactly what you might think – a first aid approach to mental health. Originally founded and developed by Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm in Australia, MHFA has been successfully introduced around the world, in countries as widespread as Hong Kong, Singapore, Finland, Canada, USA and Scotland.
This internationally recognised and evidence based two day course has been developed and regulated by the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE). It covers the causes, symptoms and treatments of common mental health problems.
Mental health problems are experienced by millions of people every day and people often suffer in silence and alone. Many people use drugs and alcohol to help them cope with what is going on in their lives and others develop mental health problems as a result of substance misuse.
Do you see signs of mental health distress around you? Do you wish that you felt confident enough to help your service users, colleagues, family and friends who are experiencing mental health problems? Now you can.
Mental Health First Aid is a 12-hour training course which will equip you with the skills and confidence to offer initial help to anyone either developing a mental health problem, or experiencing mental health distress.

Learning Objectives:

  • To preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
  • To provide help to prevent the mental health problems developing into a more serious state
  • To promote the recovery of good mental health
  • To provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem
  • To raise awareness of mental health issues in the communityTo reduce stigma and discrimination
MHFA does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help.
Each participant will receive a fully comprehensive MHFA Manual and a Certificate on completion of the course.
