What's the Deal On... Legal Highs?

Additional Info

What are legal highs, where do they come from, what do they do, what are the risks, and what can we do about them? And why are they called legal highs anyway? This one-day course will give you answers to all these questions... and more.
In 2009, mephedrone grabbed media attention with a flurry of sensational news stories dubbing it the latest “killer drug” and was quickly banned. But mephedrone is only the tip of the iceberg.
New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) are coming on to the market at the rate of one a week, and manufacturers have hundreds more just waiting to go into production... add synthetic cannabis into the mix and the situation becomes mind-boggling.
With increased availability and a sharp rise in deaths associated with these new drugs, support services, police, and policy makers are struggling to keep up.
Now that you can buy a range of drugs online and have them delivered to your door, it seems we have reached a watershed in drug consumption and control, both in the UK and worldwide.
So how can you keep abreast of this fast-changing situation, and what advice can you give users?
On this one-day course you will learn about: the history and pharmacology of these new drugs; the role of the internet in distribution; the most effective ways to give harm reduction advice to users; and what treatment options are available for those experiencing problems.

Learning Objectives

  • To review the history and pharmacology of synthetic drugs
  • To enhance understanding of the effects and risks of synthetic drugs
  • To increase awareness of harm reduction interventions with users of synthetic drugs
  • To review treatment options for those experiencing problems
