Working With Veterans: Soldier, Substances And Stigma

The ‘hiwecanhelp’ team have been working with men and women who were in the armed forces since 2010. The team have delivered a number of accredited training courses for veterans who had experienced physical, psychological and addiction problems following serving in the armed forces.

‘hi’ developed a six-week course which offered solutions to some of the everyday issues the men and women experienced, aiming to address the mental and physical health concerns, and also the offending behaviour and its root cause. Working with the veterans was a challenging experience; the outcomes were worth the struggle.

This course will skill practitioners up by sharing the sometimes harsh realities of life in and out of the armed forces. Veterans have been described as the ‘great unimpressed’ – as skilled workers, we should be able to provide a service to meet the needs of everyone who comes through the doors.

Participants will have access to online resources, reading lists and practical but inspiring ways to engage veterans and develop skills in this growing field of addiction treatment.
